The story begins here

Iran’s history is a chain: institutions, routes and rivalries often survive the rulers who created them.

What this chapter inherited

A Persian power base in Anshan, divisions within the Median elite and the wealth of neighbouring kingdoms gave both an opening and the resources to expand.

Turning point

defeated the Median king Astyages around 550 BCE, then took Lydia and Babylon. Instead of ruling only from a Persian homeland, his dynasty worked through older cities, elites and traditions across western Asia.

What changed?

The conquests joined Iranian lands to Mesopotamia, Anatolia and the eastern Mediterranean in one imperial system, creating the foundation later reorganised by Darius.

But it is not that simple

Accounts of mix contemporary records with much later Greek stories. The Cyrus Cylinder is royal Babylonian propaganda and should not be presented as a modern human-rights charter.
